Standard Cleanings & Exams

During your dental checkup, we’ll professionally clean your teeth and thoroughly examine your mouth. Dr. Sheehan will remove any plaque and tartar that has accumulated on your teeth to help prevent tooth decay and other health problems from occurring. Once your mouth is clean, she’ll look for signs of tooth decay, infections, or any other problems that may need to be addressed.

Oral Cancer & HPV Screenings

Dr. Sheehan will screen you for both oral cancer and oral HPV every time you visit our Waterford office. Regular screening helps us identify symptoms early and make timely, effective treatment decisions.

Preventive Resin Restorations

A preventive resin restoration (PRR) is a thin, resin coating that is applied to the chewing surface of your teeth to fill in  grooves, pits, and fissures. This preventative measure seals the surface of your tooth, creating a protective coating that shields your tooth from bacteria and tooth decay.

Dental Fillings

When tooth decay sets in, it’s imperative that you visit Dr. Sheehan for immediate care. If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to cavities, periodontal disease, and serious tooth infections. Dr. Sheehan will clean your tooth and remove any signs of decay before filling the space with a durable tooth-colored filling.

Root Canals

A tooth that’s severely damaged by decay or physical trauma might require root canal therapy. That way, Dr. Sheehan can save the tooth and restore it to full function.

During the root canal procedure, Dr. Sheehan will use specialized tools to create a small hole in the affected tooth. She’ll remove the infected tissue from the tooth’s core before closing it off with a dental sealant. Finally, she’ll apply an attractive dental crown to cap the tooth and protect it from reinfection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do sealants, PRRs, and fillings differ?

Sealants: Dental sealants are made of plastic and cover the surface of permanent teeth and prevent future tooth decay. They are commonly used to protect the developing teeth of children, but adults can benefit from them as well.

PRR: Similar to sealants, PRR is a preventative measure to protect those who have deep grooves in their teeth from tooth decay. They are also suitable for patients who have early signs of tooth decay that have not yet extended into the dentin layer of the tooth.

Fillings: Dental fillings are used to address teeth that have already been subjected to decay. They repair the damage done and provide additional protection from future decay.

How often should I get a dental cleaning?

Dr. Sheehan recommends scheduling a dental appointment bi-annually or at least every six months to ensure optimal oral healthcare. She may suggest additional appointments if you’re more susceptible to bacterial infections.
